Department of Quality Assurance Releases List of Accredited Government, Faith Based, and Private Higher Education Institutions In Liberia.

Rev. James Andrew Lablah, Director of Quality Assurance

The Higher Education Sector of Liberia plays a pivotal role in the process of developing its economy and support to the Pro-Poor Goal. The output and impact of the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), both individually and collectively, is central to attaining national and regional economic growth, and to build a fair and compassionate society. We need to ensure that our institutions offer programs that are sound, relevant and of quality. More so, HEIs should become entrepreneurial and innovative in nature, and should seek to learn both from good practices through mentorship or affiliation internationally. Affiliations with international chartered and accredited HEIs will provide opportunity to explore wide range of issues relevant to supporting entrepreneurship and innovation in our higher education. Entrepreneurial skills are crucial part of the competences that our graduates require more and more, in order to be able to compete in an increasingly challenging and globally competitive jobs market. As HEIs need to play a critical role in providing the high-level skills the economy needs, assisting talented people to transition into employment, generating and disseminating knowledge, driving innovation, and working together with business, government and civil society to promote economic and social development, support to this sector cannot be over emphasized.

The National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) which is the agency responsible for regulating, evaluating, accrediting, and establishing institutions of higher learning in the Republic of Liberia, is planning a HEIs Stakeholders Conference. It seeks inputs from the sector. The HEIs need to take ownership of the process, adopt workable resolutions, initiate and actualize concepts suitable for our development agenda. The NCHE pillars of service are ACCESS, RELEVANCE, and QUALITY. We are pleased to acknowledge the colossal contribution of ACCESS provision to the HEIs by the Private Sector. 2/3 of ACCESS to HEIs is provided by the Private Sector. The Private Sector is key in the developing process of HEIs in Liberia, and perhaps around the world. Engaging this sector to take ownership for RELEVANCE and QUALITY is imperative. Our updated information service shows 38 accredited HEIs by the NCHE, since 2017. Ten (10) of them are Government or Public HEIs, with nineteen (19) being Faith Based HEIs, and nine (9) are private HEIs. Below are the details for public information.
